Happy Birthday For Big Dan and Little Dan
It was that difficult time of year, again, where life was both a celebration and a remembrance of loss. Hsu had gotten somewhat better, since he got Daniel back, but he still hid himself away much of the time, with his opium and his grief.

But mornings were usually better, and Cody made sure to fix a huge, festive breakfast on Daniel's tenth birthday. Ten years old! There were hot, fresh waffles with strawberries and whipped cream, or butter and syrup. She made crisp bacon, orange juice, coffee, tea and had the first group of presents all ready for the growing boy, when he would come bounding down the stairs. The men were drawn to the decorations and the smells from the kitchen, and Cody smacked Andy's hand, when he snuck a piece of bacon.

"Happy Birthday, Daniel!!!!"

******

James had snuck downstairs at the Ranch, and cooked up a feast for breakfast, with all of his big brother's favorite things. The teenager had become a fairly good cook, and omlettes were a specialty, with potatoes, veggies, ham, bacon...whatever people wanted, and he cooked them to order. He decorated the table, and was rather proud that he had beaten his mom to the punch. There were muffins and coffee, tea and jam, and he grinned at Cody and Hsu as they came in.

"Good morning, Father!" James grinned at his dad, and then yelled upstairs. "Ben! Daniel! Get down here!"

******

Roma had imperiously demanded that the chef leave the kitchen, so she could cook her father a special breakfast. In the midst of all the drama surrounding the wedding and such, she went over to Tabar to surprise Daniel with a personally cooked gourmet breakfast, just like the stories she had heard from her mother, and it was going to be great!

The smoke alarms brought in Maxil, Ash Oktar and that odious Hart sleaze. All three men just stared at the frazzled Princess, who had sticky bits of syrup down the front of her designer blouse, and flour all in her dark hair, on her cheek and on every surface in the kitchen. John Hart took out a communicator, and used the camera option to snap a shot, before she threw a spatula at him with remarkable force and accuracy. The chef was cursing in several languages, in the hallway, waiting for Daniel to make his way in. Hart had already woken Dan up, with a birthday blowout, so Dan had gone for a shower, not knowing of the fabulous treat that would be awaiting him...once they got the fire out.

Daniel was, like any other ten-year old, excited about his birthday, but even at that age, he tempered his excitement with what this day also meant. He already knew it was hard on his father and respected that. He also never forgot for a moment that it was also his sister's day. As he came down for the breakfast, he made sure that a place had been set for Danika, and as well as helping himself to the waffles and so much more, he put a waffle on her plate, smothering it with strawberries, syrup and cream. "When I'm finished, I'm going to take this to her!" And he did just that, taking the plate down to her shrine and leaving it for her while they talked.

The presents, though, were eyed hungrily. It had been three years since he'd been overwhelmed by all the toys, games and books that had suddenly been his, and now he loved getting new things, even expecting to be indulged and spoilt as the norm of being the cherished child of a powerful and wealthy man could be. "Can I open them now, Cody!?"

"Good morning, James." This day had got easier for Hsu over the years, and while there was no hint of even the slightest smile for his younger son, his sharp eyes took in the scene in the kitchen. The boy had done very well to this all himself; he hadn't even made that much of a mess. The approval was in his eyes and in the nod he gave the teen. "It looks very good." Although he did wince when James yelled for his brother.

His brother came in, looking dishevelled next to his equally mussed up lover. Both looked still half-asleep as they headed straight for the coffee. "Hey, Jamie!" Dan managed to say once he had drank half a cup and felt a little more human. "This is great. You did this all by yourself, bro?" He grinned at Cody. "Have you managed to top your mom?"

Dan felt good this morning, a good part of that had been Hart's early morning birthday present. Now he wondered where everyone was as he made his way down to the kitchen. He came across the chef, and from the language coming from the man's mouth he had 1) probably learned from Ramsay and 2) issues with something in his domain. "Your Highness, I must protest! It is your birthday, and you are a loving father, but really this is too much. She has destroyed my kitchen!"

In his career, Dan had dealt with many sensitive, creative types, and chefs were among the worst, in his experience, for blowing things out of proportion. After promising to see what he could do, he went into the kitchen to find Ash, Hart and Maxil just standing there with stunned looks on their faces and Roma looking...well...a mess. Unfortunately, he found that the chef had not been exaggerating by much. "Er, Angel? What's going on?"

"Okay, you do that." Cody Jean was always so touched by how the little boy would honor his sister, and his enthusiasm was infectious. "But first, eat your food while it is hot, okay?" He was going through a major growth spurt, outgrowing shoes and clothes in record time. Good food and good care had done wonders for him.

The packages on the table held smaller gifts. Hsu's would be later, if he came down, and they would be much bigger. Cody had been looking at a small ATV for him, to drive on the ranch, to see if it was safe, and to get approval from Hsu. As it was, she had bought him a brand new notepad, with all the fun apps, some new video games, and a new tennis racket, so he could learn a game that his father also enjoyed.

Hsu's words were high praise, indeed, and James shone under his father's approval. Where Daniel often flouted Hsu's protection, James loved it, and he went out of his way to show respect and love for Hsu, never calling him Dad. "Thank you, Father." He poured Hsu a coffee, and set it neatly at the head of the table.

"I don't know about that, Daniel, but it was fun to make. So what do you guys want in your omlette?" Yes, James always called Daniel by his proper name, when Hsu was around. James was just plating up Hsu's, since he knew what his father liked, though he didn't go too big, because Hsu usually ate a lighter breakfast.

"Breakfast, Daddy!" She beamed at her father, and gestured to a plate of waffles, so he could fix a plate and the others could join in, even that slimy Hart weasel.

John came over and picked a waffle up, looking at the almost black outside, then dropped it back on the plate, which broke from the heavy landing.

"Hart! Quit messing with the food before my father gets his! You made a mess!" She smiled up at Daniel, pointing to the smoking waffle iron. "Don't worry, Dad, I have a fresh one, just for you, and look! I even set an extra place." She pointed through the open door to the dining room, where, sure enough, there was an empty place with flowers in a small vase by the silver.

"Place for who?" Hart looked at the table, then to the messy cook.

"You writing a book?" Roma tipped her head to look at him.

"What if I was?" Hart shot back.

She smirked, all the bitchy vented on him. "Then kiss my ass and make it a love story."

That made Ash laugh out loud, as he poured a cup of coffee that was, blessedly, made by the real chef.
